Fossil fuels & biofuels (Fuelling the future) explains where energy comes from and how sunlight, plants, and animals relate to stored energy. It describes what fossil fuels are, how they formed over millions of years, and how wood and biofuels differ from coal, natural gas, and petroleum. The text also frames why alternative fuels are needed, introduces biomass energy and waste-to-energy ideas, and weighs whether biofuels benefit Earth. It includes learning sections, a comparison chart, a timeline, and supportive glossary guidance.

FAQs

Where does most of the Earth’s energy come from?

Most of the Earth’s energy comes from the sun. Sunlight is absorbed by plants and animals, and they use energy to work, move, and grow while storing the rest.

What are fossil fuels and how are they formed?

Fossil fuels contain energy stored in ancient plants and animals. After plants and animals died, their remains turned into fossil fuels over millions of years.

What is the relationship between wood, biofuels, and fossil fuels?

Wood gives off energy from the sun when burned, and stored energy from plants is called potential energy. Fuels that come from plants are called biofuels, while fossil fuels include coal, natural gas, and petroleum (oil).
