Needless to say, when Brian first shared his plan tochange healthcare,I smiled, nodded, and rolled myeyes (internally). But after years of “hmmm”moments, and as much as it pains me to get myhopes up,his plan is ingenious and may actuallywork. Brian and I know one another through running ourown private practices in mental health.Though weshare similar views in our passion for quality patientcare, our financial models of practice are night andday. His psychiatry practice wotks on a direct paybasis (no insurance),while my group therapy practiceaccepts almost every insurance plan available. As alicensed clinical social worker,foster/adoptive momof five kids, and a certified bleeding heart,my goal isto make services as affordable and accessible aspossible to all individuals in our community.Yet,thelonger I practice, the more our current healthcare Forget Obama Trump Ignored system makes this nearly impossible.I won’t get intothe nitty-gritty,but I think Brian's book does afabulous job outlining why doctors and therapistsare discarding their insurance contracts. The real reason why I believe his plan works?I'maccidentally living it.I have been uninsured for thepast four or so years. When I first stepped into theworld of self-employment,I paid privately for insurance-nearly $500.00 per MONTH.That lasteda good six to eight months before I realized Icouldn't afford the monthly premium, especiallywhen I hadn’t even used the insurance for anyreason.I went another three years of being a cashpay client (no insurance,no catastrophic coverage, nada).Sady, the fines to my income for not having healthinsurance were still less than the premiums I would have paidfor an insurance I never used [remember, poor socialworker here].Only recently have I joined a type ofhealth co-op which I consider similar to catastrophiccoverage. I am cheap, but I value my health.I want to live along time for my kiddos. That said,Brian's planencourages accountability and resourcefulness.Assomeone who is professionally reaping the negativeconsequences of our current healthcare system alongside the personal benefits of living this model,Isay with confidence that his idea works. Here's mychallenge to you:Open your eyes to the possibilitiesof what could be.Brian tells everyone to "stay 1 Forget Obama Trump Ignored woke.”Here's your first guide.Trust me,it's a funride on what we thought was a beaten topic. -Anastasia“Stas”Taylor,MSSW,LCSW # Forget Obama Trump Ignored ## Preface As a child psychiatrist and behavior therapist, mypatients don't tend to lie on the couch andpontificate. So,I designed this book much like Iwould one of my private sessions. You ask mecommon questions about healthcare reform and Itell you the ugly truth.Lucky for you,I'll give youthe actual answer to the problem (my patients haveto find their own,and fortunately most of them do). There is a ridiculous amount written about why ourhealthcare system is jacked up.When you go "huh?",be sure to check out the endnotes for details. -Brian J Dixon MD For
