For Loop Chess Board - Make it print a chess board

Nov 2, 2026

Explains how to implement and run a Java program that renders a chessboard pattern using nested for-loops and alternating output of 1s and 0s. Provides the core loop structure for iterating rows and columns, including the calculation of parity to decide which squares print as 1 or 0. Includes reflective prompts on enlarging or shrinking the board size, stacking one board over another, printing multiple layered boards, and taking square size input from the user to generate the board dynamically.

FAQs

How do you run the program to display the chessboard pattern?

Place the code inside a standard Java class and include it in the main method. Running it will print a board made of 1s and 0s.

How can the chessboard be enlarged or shrunk?

Change the board dimensions by modifying the loop bounds so each square grid prints a different number of 0s/1s, such as 2 by 2 or 6 by 6.

How can you print multiple boards layered on top of each other?

Modify the code so the output of one board is repeated in an interleaved way above another, and extend the idea to print a 4-board square by adding additional layered iterations.
