| FEMINISM 1. MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT
Thoughts on the Education of Daughters (1787):Wollstonecraft’s first published work, Thoughts on the Education of Daughters, reflects her early engagement with the question of women’s upbringing ina patriarchal society. The text is essentially a conduct manual but with a reformist spirit, advocating for rational education and moral instruction for women rather than the superficial accomplishments (such as music or embroidery) that were typically encouraged at the time. She stresses the importance of instilling virtue, reason, and independence in girls so that they could become good mothers, wives, and citizens. Though still somewhat constrained by 18thcentury moral expectations, this book foreshadows the radical feminist arguments she would later develop.

Mary: A Fiction (1788):Her only complete novel, Mary: A Fiction, is both a narrative and a philosophical experiment. It presents the story of Mary, a young woman trapped in an oppressive marriage and yearning for intellectual and emotional companionship. Through this fictional framework, Wollstonecraft critiques the limited roles and lack of autonomy imposed on women in her society. The novel portrays the protagonist’s inner life, her desire for independence, and her resistance to conventional female roles, making it an important precursor to the feminist novel. While not considered a major literary masterpiece, it reveals Wollstonecraft’s growing conviction that personal relationships and social structures must be reformed for women’s liberation.
A Vindication of the Rights of Men (1790):This political pamphlet was Wollstonecraft’s direct response to Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790) . Defending the French Revolution, she attacked Burke’s defense of aristocracy, monarchy, and inherited privilege, championing instead the principles of equality, liberty, and justice. It was also her first major political statement, arguing that society should be organized on rational and egalitarian grounds rather than tradition and hierarchy. The work established Wollstonecraft as a significant political thinker of her time and set the stage for her later feminist critique by linking the oppression of women to the broader structures of class and power. | | --- | | | | A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792):This is Wollstonecraft’s most famous and influential work, regarded as a foundational text of modern feminism. Written in the wake of debates about the French Revolution and rights discourse, the book argues that women are not naturally inferior to men but appear so because they lack education and opportunities. She insists that women should have access to rational, rigorous education and the same moral and intellectual development as men, enabling them to contribute to society as equal citizens. Wollstonecraft critiques the way women are socialized into dependence, vanity, and frivolity, arguing that such conditions harm not only women but also men, families, and society as a whole. By tying women’s emancipation to broader political and social reform, the work became a revolutionary call for gender equality and remains a cornerstone of feminist philosophy.
emphasis on subjective experience , nature, and the interconnection of personal and political life. It shows Wollstonecraft as both philosopher and literary stylist, combining emotional intensity with sharp social critique.

Letters Written in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark (1796):Written during her travels in Scandinavia, this text blends travel writing, personal reflection, and political philosophy. It differs from her earlier polemical works by adopting a more lyrical and emotional tone, meditating on nature, society, and human relationships. The letters also reveal Wollstonecraft’s struggles with personal despair, particularly her tumultuous relationship with Gilbert Im
