This document outlines an Extended Response Rubric designed for assessing student performance on written responses, suitable for preparation for GED®, TASC®, and HiSET® examinations. The rubric details criteria across four key areas: Answering the Question & Development, Organization, and Grammar & Mechanics. For each area, performance levels are defined: Not Passing, Passing, Firmly Passing, and Exemplary Passing. The 'Answering the Question & Development' section evaluates the clarity and strength of the claim and the quality of supporting evidence, including the discussion of counterclaims. The 'Organization' section assesses the structure of the response, focusing on the introduction, conclusion, transitions, and paragraph development. The 'Grammar & Mechanics' section evaluates command of language, including punctuation, capitalization, spelling, word choice, and tone. The rubric specifies that exemplary responses will have a clear, well-developed claim supported by specific and fully explained evidence, excellent organization with strong paragraph development and transitions, and a formal style with no errors in grammar or mechanics. The document was revised on 01/04/2018.
