Exploring Populations presents a high school biology immersion unit within the SCALE (System-wide Change for All Learners and Educators) Partnership. The acknowledgements describe collaborative development with multiple university and school district partners, plus grant support from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. The unit includes lesson-linked, permissioned instructional resources for teachers and students, with specific examples and credits, while restricting further reproduction and distribution beyond SCALE partners. Content includes a science explanation for population change.

Development of this Unit is a collaborative effort involving educators from University of WisconsinMadison, Los Angeles Unified School District, and California State University-Northridge, Dominguez Hills, and Los Angeles. Numerous administrators, professors, teachers, and students were involved in rigorous content review, field-testing, and focus groups that provided valuable insight for development and subsequent revisions of the Immersion Unit version presented here. It is intended to be circulated for consultation and use within the SCALE community only. To request permission to copy or disseminate outside SCALE’s institutional partners, please contact the SCALE Administrative Office at Wisconsin Center for Education Research, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1025 West Johnson Street, Madison WI 53706, ATTN: IMMERSION UNIT DISSEMINATION REQUEST, or by telephone at (608) 265-2621.
The preparation of this unit and accompanying CD was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation to the University of Wisconsin–Madison (EHR 0227016) for a Mathematics & Science Partnership project called the System-wide Change for All Learners and Educators (SCALE) Partnership. At UWMadison, the SCALE project is housed in the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. The other partners are California State University, Dominquez Hills; California State University, Northridge; the Los Angeles Unified School District; the Denver Public School District; the Providence Public School District; and the Madison Metropolitan School District. The preparation of this report also was supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to California State University, Dominguez Hills (E.D. P336B040052) for a Teacher Quality Enhancement project called Quality Educator Development (QED).
