Experiments with SOIL - My science investigations - How to do an experiment

Oct 13, 2026

Soil science investigations guide experiments that start from real questions, observations, and hypotheses, then follow a structured procedure to test ideas and draw conclusions from recorded data. The book explains soil composition in everyday surroundings, introduces key scientific roles such as geologists and pedologists, and walks through step-by-step methods including logging observations, planning procedures, carrying out experiments, and comparing results to hypotheses. Contents also include practical soil activities and supporting references like a glossary and index.

FAQs

What is the scientific process used in these soil investigations?

Scientists begin with a question, gather information, make a hypothesis, then set up an experiment. They record observations and compare results with the hypothesis to reach a conclusion.

How is soil described in the book?

Soil is the top layer of ground where plants can grow, made of a mixture of water, air, tiny rocks, and bits of plants and animals.

What steps are recommended to run an experiment in this book?

Start a log, write observations, questions, and hypotheses; plan the procedure step by step; carry out the experiment and record everything; then compare results with the hypothesis and state what was learned as the conclusion.
