Should I go to a chess club, or take dance lessons?” Tushig wondered.“Oh, I know what to do, I’ll take a drawing class and improve my drawing skills.” The drawing class was definitely the best choice. There were many children in the class, and the walls were covered with beautiful drawings. At every table each child had their own paper and colored pencils. The teacher asked them to introduce themselves and share what they’d like to draw. Tushig really liked this drawing class. The teacher gave them an assignment: draw something they want to give to their loved ones . Tushig started to draw beautiful flowers for his mother. But the flowers didn’t look as pretty as he had hoped. He wondered why. He tried his best to make them beautiful, but it didn’t work. He needed a red colored pencil to complete his drawing. All the children were focused on their drawings, and the room was completely quiet. Tushig looked around. Misheel was drawing red flowers too. The red flowers looked very nice on the white paper. Tushig asked to borrow her red colored pencil. But Misheel kept drawing as if she didn’t hear him. Tushig was sad he couldn’t add the final touch to his drawing. Maybe he could use that red colored pencil quickly and put it right back? He took the red colored pencil without Misheel’s permission. Finally, he could finish his drawing of red flowers . The teacher came over and told him that it wasn’t polite to take a classmate’s pencil without permission. Tushig replied, “I asked her, but she didn’t want to share .” The teacher calmly explained that Misheel is Deaf and that she uses sign language to communicate. Misheel smiled at him as if nothing happened. The teacher showed Tushig how to sign “I’msorry.” She told him to rub the back of his hand with the other hand. This was the first time Tushig had met someone who was Deaf. He felt bad for assuming she didn’t want to share and then taking her pencil without permission. Tushig’s grandmother was waiting for him outside when his class was over . He told his grandmother what had happened in class.
