EPIC ON THE SCHUYLKILL: The Valley Forge Encampment, 1777-1778 traces how the winter camp became a symbol of endurance during 1777–1778. It describes the Valley Forge site’s transformation from the Mt. Joy iron works and related mills to a strategic military location. It then outlines the lead-up to the encampment, including British movements toward Philadelphia, clashes such as Brandywine, Germantown, and Paoli, and Washington’s relocation to Gulph Mills and ultimately Valley Forge.

For generations of Americans,Valley Forge has provided a symbolof patriotic devotion, epitomizing the ideals which brought our nationinto being and which have determined its character throughout thesucceeding years. The pages which follow seek to convey some ideaof what the experience was like for the men who endured and,in theend, surmounted it. # VALLEY FoRGE:THE PLACE The area where the American army spent the winter of 1777-78comprises a rough triangle of some two thousand acres.Bounded onthe north for nearly three miles by the Schuylkill River, its westernedge extends along Valley Creek for about a mile and a half, and itssoutheastern limits stretch for three and a quarter miles along a lowridge which slopes off gently toward Trout Creek on the east. Originally, the tract containing the future encampment was partof the “Manor of Mt.Joy”which,in 1701,William Penn granted tohis daughter,Letitia.About 1742,the "Mt.Joy Forge"was developedthere, later coming to be known more commonly as the “Valley Forge”-not a simple blacksmith shop, but a complete ironworks.Between1751 and 1757,a sawmill was added, and by 1757 the entire propertyhad been purchased by John Potts,a prominent Quaker ironmaster. In 1758 or 1759,he erected a gristmill.About 1774,one of John Potts'ssons,Isaac, built a stone house on the eastern side of Valley Creeknear the Schuylkill.A larger house was built nearby and within ashort time,William Dewees,a son-in-law of John Potts, had acquiredthis house and, along with Isaac Potts, joint ownership of the forge. The coming of war in 1775 gave the Mt.Joy establishment signifi-cance as a source of military materials, and a large part of the outputwas devoted to the war effort. It was thus a logical military objectivewhen fighting moved to Pennsylvania.British forces reached ValleyForge on September 18,1777,and before leaving on September 23,they burned the sawmill and the forge, although the gristmill wasspared. # THE PRELIMINARIES Early in September,1777,a British army under Sir William Howelanded at the northern end of Chesapeake Bay,aiming to occupy Phila-delphia,the American capital.George Washington interposed hisAmerican army between the British and the city. The two forcesclashed indecisively at Brandywine Creek, then Howe sideslippednorthwestward.Although Washington tried to block the advance, hewas outmaneuvered and,on September 23,the Britis
