THE present work is an attempt to supply the Urdu equivalentsof words and phrases commonly occurring in business,in Legislativeenactments,and in law proceedings.These equivalents are from the Arabie,the Persian,the Hindee,and the Sanskrit languages,which compose andconstitute the Urdu. Besides law technicalities strictly so called,the work comprehendsa great many phrases of common speech which are employed in law papersand mercantile transactions in some special sense.The insertion,in a tech-nical Dictionary,of phrases common to technical and ordinary language,isa necessary consequence of the defective character of the Anglo-HindustaniDictionaries we yet possess.The meanings therein given are by far too few,and do not comprise the different uses of a word.Rarely do we find in themmore than one or two of its significations,and more rarely are these discri-minated.The translator consults them in vain,for the most part,forsynonyms,phrases,or idioms. The equivalents here furnished will be found often numerous.Their purpose is two fold;copiousness for the student and synonyms forthe translator;the one requires that every signification of a word shall haveits appropriate equivalents;the other that every cognate idea shall find ade-quate expression both in the native and in the borrowed terms of the mixedlanguage.The learner who does not know the several equivalents of theEnglish word,may find in the Dictionary the object of his search;while theadvanced scholar who knows the Urdu word,but to whom it will not alwaysreadily occur,may select from the group the one which,according to hisknowledge or his taste,he may judge most suitable to convey his meaning. The materials for this compilation have been derived,in the main,from colloquial intercouese,original law proceedings,and the authorizedtranslations of Legislative enactments and appellate decisions.What wasat first a Note book of words and phrases,set down as they occurred,forprivate reference,was subsequently arranged for greater convenience in al-phabetical order.New matter was added from time to time,and the ma-nuscript grew to a size which suggested the idea of publication. PREFACE. To adapt the work,however,to general use,the scanty vocabu-lary which had suficed for the particular purpose of a single individualwould need further additions;and to make it worthy of publication,itmust be thoroughly digested,and rendered as fulland accurate as possible.Accordingly,more words and phrases and new renderings were introduced;allthe significations of the English word,specially appertaining to law orbusiness,were put down in the order of primary and secondary meanings,with their respective Urdu equivalents,separate and distinct;and thephrases were similarly arranged,so that the phrase next to another in senseshould be next to it also in place.Finally,the Urdu words under each sub-division were themselves disposed in a certain order.Thus,the first Urduword represents the primary or most comprehensive meaning,or it is theword most current and familiar;while the synonyms,Arabic,Persian andHindee,possessing precisely one and the same acceptation,have been placed,generally,in juxtaposition.The reading of the different meanings is fromleft to right,as in English.
