Engineering Drawing - Week 2 - Introduction, Tools and Practicing

Oct 23, 2026

Engineering Drawing Week 2 introduces engineering drawing as a technical, graphical language used to define requirements for manufactured parts through views, dimensions, and essential information. The material explains how drawing communicates from the designer to the worker and outlines key drawing tools and their functions, including board, paper, tape, pencils, T-square, set squares, scale, protractor, French curves, and compass. It also covers drawing scales as ratios, including actual, enlargement, and reduction scales, and describes the title block at the bottom-right corner with identification and validity details.

Drawing Tools and their Uses • Drawing board: Is a smooth wooden board that is used to keep and support the drawing paper. The drawing board should be kept clean, flat and smooth. • Drawing paper: A3 drawing paper with a margin of 1 cm at all sides. • Paper tape: Used to hold the drawing paper on the drawing board. • Pencils: Used to draw the required objects or shapes. The accuracy of the drawing depends on the quality of the pencils used. • T-square: Usually fitted to the left side of the drawing board and slides along the edge of the board. Used to draw horizontal straight lines. • Set squares (triangles): Triangular-shaped squares with one of the angles is right angle (90 degrees) . Two ser squares are usually used with 45 ,45 , 90 degrees or 30 , 60 , 90 degrees. In combination with T-square, set squares are used to draw straight lines at an angle. • Scale (ruler): Used to draw lines at a specific length. • Protractor: Used to draw or measure angles. • French curves: Used to draw curves that can’t be drawn using Compass. • Compass: Used to draw circles or arcs at specific distance Drawing Scales Scale is the ratio of the linear dimension of an element of an object shown in the drawing to the real linear dimension of the same element of the object. FAQs

What is engineering drawing and what does it communicate?

Engineering drawing is a type of technical drawing that clearly defines requirements for engineered items using views, dimensions, and necessary information. It communicates needed details from the engineer who designed the part to the worker who will make it.

Which drawing tools are discussed and what are their uses?

The notes cover the drawing board, drawing paper (A3 with a 1 cm margin), paper tape, pencils, T-square for horizontal lines, set squares for angled straight lines, scale for specific lengths, protractor for angles, French curves for special curves, and compass for circles or arcs.

How are drawing scales defined and what types are included?

Drawing scale is the ratio of the linear dimension shown on the drawing to the real linear dimension of the same element. The notes include actual size (1:1), enlargement scales (e.g., X:1), and reduction scales (e.g., 1:X).

What information is included in the title block?

The title block is typically located at the bottom-right corner and contains information to identify the drawing and verify its validity, including items such as university/faculty, title of drawing, student name and ID, drawing number, date, and scale.
