Featured Electronic Products

Report to Senior Electronics Engineers &Managers September 1972Volume 90,Number 3 # ELECTRONIC DEVELOPMENTS RECE I VE I·R 100 AWARDS Each year, industry announces more than 10,000 various newproducts. Some of these items are available to the everydayconsumer and others are not. Since 1963,Industrial Research Inc.,222 S.Riverside Plaza,Chicago, has conducted the I·R 100 Competition to focus attentionon those 100—out of the many thous ands—new technical productsdeveloped each year that truly are worthy of the attention ofthe technical community. An equally important purpose of theI·R 100 awards is to recognize the valuable contributions ofthe nation's top innovators that helped to desithesevery select products. Awards for the most outstanding technical products, laboratorydesign, and R&D achievement where presented in conjunction withthe I·R 100 Conference, held Sept.20 and 21 at the Museum ofScience &Industry in Chicago. At a black-tie banquet climaxing the conference, beautifullyengraved plaques where presented to the developers of thewinning products in the I·R 100 competition, the owner of andarchitect of the Laboratory of the Year, and the recipient ofthe Man of the Year award. A check for $1,000 was presented to Dr.Thor Heyerdah1,IndustrialResearch's Man of the Year, for his scientific and technologicalcontributions over the past years. of the 100 winners,Electro-Technology has selected those productsthat are of particular significance to the field of electronics.Included in the review on the s ubsequent pages are electronicdevices and systems,computers,electro-mechanical devices, and elect ronic materials. A unique probe-mounted readout puts the data right where the useris looking as he probes a circuit. A three-and-a-half digit LEDdisplay set in the probe handle of the Mode1167"Auto-Probe"digital multimeter, developed by Keithley Instruments Inc.inCleveland, provides direct digital readout of voltage, resistance, and current. The Model 167,the lowest-cost automatic-ranging battery-operateddigital multimeter available, can measure dc voltage from 1mV to1kV and ac voltage from 1mV to 500V with an accuracy of ±0.2%.Resistance can be measured from 1 ohm to 20 Mohms with the sameaccuracy. Other features of the unit include automatic ranging,1,200 Voverload protection, fast measuring time of less than_2 seconds, and 100%over-ranging. The battery-operated Mode1167 is designedfor use wherever electrical measurements must be made, such asin research and design labs and production areas. A pers onal early-warning system for patients with a history ofcardiac disease or those in a very high-risk heart attackcategory has been developed by Cardiodynamics Inc.,Dublin,Ca1."VIDA"(Ventricular Impulse Detector and Alarm)is a pocket-sized device that continuously monitors a patient's electrocardiogram(ECG)and notifies the patient of heartbeatirregularities, that signify a possible heart attack,so he canseek aid. VIDA is a miniature computer, powered by a transistor battery, and gets its heart signals from two small electrodes taped toa patient's chest. The system registers the heartbeat and isprogramed to sound a beeping alarm in case of abnormalities. In addition, the system is designed to transmit the patient'selectrocardiogram through an ordinary telephone to a receiverLocated at a doctor's office or hospital. This provides animmediate ECG reading for medical diagnosis and further advice, regardless of the patient's distance from his physician. A rugged gas laser acts as the pen in an unusual new XY recorderdeveloped by the Scientific Measuring Instruments Div.,SiemensCorp.,Iselin,N.J. The new laser beam recorder is able to present dynamic variableswith frequencies up to 250 Hz for recording, direct viewing,or enlarged projection. The fine, coherent laser beam is movedin two dimensions over a 10 x 10 inc
