In Western countries average life expectanciesare about 75 for men and 80 for women.Thereare wide variations around these averages, andsome life-style behaviours are probablyinvolved. This booklet aims to raise your awareness ofdietary hazards that we voluntarily exposeourselves to on a daily basis. You may besurprised by the book's focus on alcohol. It's arelatively overlooked cause of ill health andreduced life span.In the Western world, alcoholic drinks are used as a lubricant in manysocial situations.A majority of people probablygive little thought to alcohol's potential to causeill health and reduce healthy life span. Alcohol is fairly toxic, and it's quite easy toconsume amounts that negatively affect health. When digested,it is oxidized to acetaldehyde, which is much more toxic than aicohol itself. There are also wide variations in the sensitivityof individuals to the toxic effects of alcohol andacetaldehyde. These factors are explored in thetext. Other behavioural factors that affect longevityinclude smoking and diet.A review of thesefactors and others that have an impact onhealthy living is also included. Genetic factors must have a role shaping aperson's years of healthy life. However, thisbooklet focuses on the main behavioural factorsthat are likely to affect health and life span. These are: Alcohol Intake Smoking Overeating Alcohol consumption and smoking are notessential for life, like food and water are.Theyboth cause ill health and reduce lifespan. Overeating is in a different category -eating isof course essential to preserve good health, buteating more than is required to maintain healthcan be harmful. This subject will also bediscussed. Alcohol intake and smoking are chosenvoluntarily, often with little thought being givento their possible long-term effect on health. A balanced diet is essential, and problemsoccur when food types and amounts areinappropriate. The McGovern Committeepublished its "Dietary Goals for the UnitedStates”in 1980,giving sensible advice onhuman dietary needs. However, many peopleare unaware of its conclusions I'll cover the most important variables forhealthy living in the sections that follow.
