Edward Taylor - Thy Human Frame, My Glorious Lord, I Spy

Oct 19, 2026

A devotional poem by Edward Taylor (1645–1729) presented in an early modern, emblem-like style. The speaker meditates on Christ in bodily metaphors—frame, mouth, neck, speech, words, and a vial or bottle—portraying grace as distilled and conveyed through divine “liquor” and “tincture.” Each image emphasizes transformation: grace is poured into the soul, warms the spirit, preserves the heart, and ultimately refines the believer’s language and life.
