The work develops a rosin-based amine oxide surfactant (R-11-3-AO) synthesized from rosin derivatives, dehydroabietic acid and long-chain amino acids, to create surfactant aggregates with distinctive properties. Cryo-transmission electron microscopy reveals extremely long wormlike micelles (4–5 nm cross-sectional diameter) near 7 mmol·L−1. A gel-like system forms around 30 mmol·L−1 via dense entanglement, and solutions show shear thickening at ~10 s−1 even at high concentration. Strong van der Waals interactions from large hydrophobic groups drive rapid micelle growth, and the surfactant is recoverable from solutions via salting-out with high recovery rates, enabling new surfactant recovery strategies.
