Drivers Education at The Dalton School 108 East 89th Street, New York, NY 10128-212-423-5441 – [www.dalton.org](www.dalton.org) Goal: Students are taught in the classroom and in the vehicle by New York State accredited teachers licensed to provide a comprehensive introduction to their driving experience. The primary goal is to teach the safe, efficient operation of a motor vehicle and to develop the proper habits and attitudes needed for defensive driving. Besides the course hours, additional practice is highly recommended to bring a new driver to higher levels of driving performance. Upon Completion: Students who successfully complete the course will receive a student certificate of completion (MV-285), which includes an insurance premium reduction certificate. After receiving the MV-285 and passing the road test, a 17-year-old is eligible for a full, New York State senior license. A 16-year-old is issued a junior license with restrictions, which automatically turns into a senior license on their 17th birthday (without completion of a driver’s education program, a New York State senior license is not issued until age 18) . Eligibility: Students must be 16 by September 26th, 2025, for the fall semester. All registered students must secure a NYS Learner’s Permit or non-Driver ID prior to the first day of class. (For more information, please visit the DMV website: [http://www.dmv.ny.gov](http://www.dmv.ny.gov)). NYS law requirements state that all students taking a road test must be 18 years of age or must have a Learner’s Permit for at least 6 months. Course Information: Students are required to attend sessions that consist of classroom and driving instruction including observation. Attendance is mandatory for all enrolled students. Absences/Make-Ups: Please note that you are permitted two excused absences (either driving or lecture) during the program. These absences are intended for use in the event of extenuating circumstances. Any absences beyond these two excused instances will result in lost driving time and may jeopardize your ability to pass the course. Tuition: Tuition is $750.00 (plus $25.00 registration fee). Please follow the steps provided below on how to register for the program. Tuition does not include fees paid to the Department of Motor Vehicles for obtaining a Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License. Tuition also does not include fees incurred for scheduling a Road Test and/or additional private lessons taken beyond the course requirement. Refund Policy: A full refund for the course can be issued before the start date of the program. A partial refund for the course ($500.00) will only be issued if the student drops before the third session. Refund requests submitted after the third session will not be processed if timely notification is not given. Additionally, the $25 registration fee is non-refundable. If a student is registered and needs to transfer to a later course, they will be refunded the tuition for the course and can reenroll in the appropriate semester. The tuition and registration fee are due upon registration.
