DRIVE BELT ROUTING - Description - Drive Belt Routing - Cherokee - Comanche - Wagoneer - Wrangler - Grand Wagoneer

Oct 29, 2026

DRIVE BELT ROUTING covers Jeep 1983-88 Cherokee and related models including Comanche, Wagoneer, Wrangler, and Grand Wagoneer. It explains two drive belt systems: the conventional V-belt and the single serpentine (V-ribbed) belt, including the role of a belt tensioner, expected belt life, and limitations under extreme belt length. It provides inspection guidance for fraying, alignment, tensioner travel limits, noise, and allowable belt cracks. It also outlines how to install and route belts, with engine-specific four- and six-cylinder belt arrangement references.

# DRIVE BELT ROUTING 1988 Jeep Cherokee 1983-88 ENGINE COOLINGJeep Drive Belt Routing Cherokee,Comanche,Wagoneer,Wrangler,Grand Wagoneer # DESCRIPTION Two drive belt systems are used on Jeep vehicles.Theconventional V-Belt and the single Serpentine or V-Ribbed belt. The single(Serpentine or V-Ribbed)drive belt systemhas been adopted by several manufacturers as a replacement formultiple V-Belt systems previously offered. The Serpentine beltrequires a suitable belt tensioner similar to those used to controltiming belt tension. Use of a tensioner allows engine accessories to be mountedrigidly on the engine. The single belt drive system has a predictedlife of 100,000 miles before replacement is required. The belt tensioner has a wide functional range and iscapable of maintaining tension during the expected life of the belt.Tensioner cannot compensate for extreme belt lengths.Poor tensioncontrol and possible tensioner damage can result from excessive beltlength. INSPECTION Inspect belt for fraying. If fraying has occurred, ensurebelt and tensioner are aligned properly.See Fig.1.If tensioner hasreached its limit of travel,belt_is excessively stretched andreplacement of belt is required. If excessive noise is noticed fromtensioner or idler, check for possible bearing failure.Small cracksin the back of the belt are acceptable.Do not apply"Belt Dressing"or any other additive to serpentine belt. FAQs

What drive belt systems are used on these Jeep vehicles?

Two systems are used: a conventional V-belt and a single serpentine (V-ribbed) belt system.

How should the serpentine belt tensioner and belt be inspected?

Inspect the belt for fraying, verify belt and tensioner alignment, and check whether the tensioner has reached its travel limit. If excessive noise is present, check for bearing failure; small cracks on the back of the belt are acceptable.

What should not be done to a serpentine belt?

Do not apply “Belt Dressing” or any other additive to the serpentine belt.
