A comprehensive guide to figure drawing in a classical style, centered on principles from the Old Masters and an emphasis on line and value to create three-dimensional form. The book translates historical approaches into practical methods, including foundational terminology, tool and shading techniques, contour and perspective modeling, proportional measurement, foreshortening, and focused study of the head, features, hands, and feet. It also presents short-pose figure drawing to build disciplined practice and creative direction.

DOUBLE CURVATURE A form turning in two directions. PEAK POINT The highest point of a form. SPACE CURVE A line that travels three-dimensionally in space. BASE BOUNDARY An imaginary enclosed line (shape) that describes where a form originates. OPTICAL BOUNDARY The outside boundary or outside shape (contour) of a form. RELIEF FORMS High, middle or low forms that rise up from a larger surface underneath. SURFACE CENTER A line that runs down or across the center of a surface of a form (as opposed to an axis, which runs deep through the middle of a form) . CROSS-SECTION The intersection of a three-dimensional body with a plane; the end view of a cut made across a form. OVERLAPPING LINES Indicate one form in front of another. PLANE A flat or slightly curved single-planed surface; a conception used by artists to simplify a multi-planed surface or a curved surface. 3 Introduction This book seeks to shed light on the principles exemplified in the drawings of the Old Masters . Much of the information it contains is the result of a long, meaningful collaboration with my teacher, Michael Aviano. We share a deep passion for classical drawings, particularly those created during the Renaissance, the Baroque period and the eighteenth century. Drawings from these periods see

FAQs

What core idea does the book use to teach classical figure drawing?

It focuses on the power of line and how line combined with value builds the third dimension. The figure is taught through a process of deconstructing and reconstructing what is seen from life or imagination.

Which materials and techniques are covered in the early chapters?

The book covers drawing tools, fundamental drawing strategies, accuracy checks, and shading methods such as hatching, graining, and stumping, along with guidance on selecting and using white or toned paper.

How does the book address perspective, proportions, and foreshortening?

It explains contour and perspective using basic geometric forms, then develops measurement strategies and classical proportions. It follows with dedicated instruction on the principles and practice of foreshortening, including demonstrations.

What practice format does the book recommend for developing figure drawing skills?

It stresses practicing the right way and believes longer studies come before testing yourself with short poses. It then explores short-pose figure drawing while using underlying principles such as axes, centerlines, and movement.
