Manual McAfee DAT-file update guidance for resolving malware issues when standard remediation and security updates fail. Instructions cover restoring Windows desktop icons, running system restore or an updated antivirus, and selectively updating Engine-folder DAT files (e.g., SCAN.DAT) by disabling scanner protection, extracting trusted ZIP contents, and re-enabling protection. Additional removal troubleshooting includes killing a specific Application Updater process, running HijackThis with a report, reviewing browser helper objects and DNS settings, and using Malwarebytes for a full scan and cleanup, with cautions about System Restore handling.
