Though the palatial lobby was buzzing with life, there was a sense of ordered calm that, along with the soothing piped music, was instantly relaxing. Her heels clicked on the marble ﬂoor as she crossed to the bank of elevators, waving to Tony on the reception desk as she passed. He acknowledged her with a quick nod and a smile before returning his attention to the guests he was checking in. She sidestepped the small group of people waiting for the elevator, who shot her curious looks as she swiped her key-card to open the small private car which served only the penthouse. The doors opened instantly and she stepped inside, checking herreﬂection in the mirror as she was whisked to the top of the building. There was no chance of anyone mistaking her for a guest, she thought. She was deﬁnitely not penthouse material. She looked professional and businesslike in a gray pencil skirt and crisp white blouse, her long, dark brown hair pulled back into a neat ponytail. But she didn’t have that aura of wealth and privilege that surrounded the typical resident of the hotel’s exclusive suite. Her phone buzzed just as the doors opened into the spacious marble hallway of the penthouse. She pulled it from her purse and glanced at the screen. It was her roommate Laura. ‘Hi!’ She smiled into the phone as she moved into the vast living room, automatically drawn to the ﬂoor-to-ceiling windows that of- fered stunning panoramic views over Chicago. Wow! It was breathtaking. She’d only been up here once before and she had forgotten how spectacular it was. ‘Hi,’ Laura said.‘Where are you?’ ‘Sorry, I’m running a little late,’ she said, gazing out over the city as she spoke.‘I had to swing by the Fairchild and check out the penthouse. The son and heir is arriving tomorrow, so I just have to make sure everything’s shipshape for his stay.’ ‘Carver Fairchild?’ ‘The one and only.’ ‘Ooh, is he going to be your boss? Will you be under him?’ Laura asked, her tone laden with innuendo. ‘No, I won’t be under him – in any sense of the word.
