Direct Enrollment Placement - Spring 2022 - English and Math Placement Rules

Sep 14, 2026

Uploaded by Connor

Direct enrollment and informed self-placement rules for new and current students define how to place learners into English and math courses for the Spring 2022 term. New students are grouped by recent high school or GED graduation timing, with English and math placement based on GPA and standardized test thresholds for direct enrollment, while older graduates complete an enrollment survey to determine readiness. Crosswalks map prior coursework and prior units to specific college-level and developmental course placements, including MDE 10/60 progression and prerequisite notes, guidance, and validity periods.

FAQs

How are new students placed into English courses under Direct Enrollment Placement?

Placement into ENG 111, ENG 115, or ENG 108 depends on high school GPA and required test scores (SAT EWR, ACT English & Reading, and GED thresholds). Different GPA/test ranges map to specific course groupings, including EDE 10 for students below the minimum thresholds.

What process determines placement for students using Informed Self-Placement if they graduated 6+ years ago?

Students complete the admission application, RCC provides a link to the VCCS Enrollment Survey, and students log in with myVCCS credentials. The survey delivers questions based on graduation date, includes English/math examples matched to the student’s major, and results guide automated placement into the highest-level math and English group.

How do course crosswalks and MDE progression affect math placement for returning or continuing students?

Crosswalk tables map prior courses or satisfied units to placements such as MTH 111/132, MTH 154/155, MTH 131, MTH 161, or MTH 167. Progression rules specify eligibility after earning S or U in MDE 10 and MDE 60, including retake requirements and the transition into specific subsequent math courses.
