Chair castor test provides an indication of how textile floor coverings behave under wear stress caused by the movement of weighted chairs with castors, such as office chairs. The standard defines key terms, including visible appearance change attributable to the chair castor test, with severity graded according to DIN 54,328. It describes the test principle using a rotating table and three weighted castors, including a controlled curved path and a 160° turnaround, and specifies sampling and standard climate conditioning requirements before testing.

Scope and purpose The chair castor test is used to give an indication of thebehavior of textile floorcoverings under stress due to themovement of weighted chairs with castors(e.g.,office chairs). # 2. Terms Change in the appearance of the textile floorcovering A change in the appearance of a textile floorcovering in thesense of this standard is a visible change in appearance due towear stress in the chair castor test. It is determined accordingto DIN 54,328. The degree of change is expressed by an overallgrade. This gives an indication of the possible changes in thetextile floorcovering during use. Page 2 The change in the appearance of the textile floorcovering maybe due to a change in structure, raising of the nap or a change inthe color design. # 3. Brief description of the process In the test method described in this standard, the testsamples are attached to a table and subjected to stress by threeweighted castors(see Figure 1). Both the table and the castormount are set in rotation. By an appropriate choice of the relationship between the rotational speed of the table and that ofthe castor mount,a type of path of the castors can be achievedwhich entails not only a certain movement of the castors in acurved path but also a turnaround maneuver of the castors of 160°approximately at the outer edge of the stress tested area of the Figure 1. Samplina and sample preparation ## 4.1 Sampling Sampling is done in accordance with DIN 53,803 Part 2. ## 4.2 Adapting the samples to the standard climate The test samples must be adapted to the standard climate(20±2)°C and(65±2)%relative atmospheric humidity for atleast 48 hours in accordance with DIN 53,802.

FAQs

What is the chair castor test used to indicate?

It indicates the behavior of textile floor coverings under wear stress caused by the movement of weighted chairs with castors, such as office chairs.

How is a change in appearance defined and graded?

A change is a visible appearance change due to wear stress in the chair castor test, determined according to DIN 54,328 and expressed by an overall grade.

How is the test performed at a high level?

Test samples are attached to a table and stressed by three weighted castors, with the table and castor mount set in rotation; suitable speed ratios produce a curved castor path and an approximately 160° turnaround near the outer edge of the stressed area.
