OWNER’S MANUAL Please read before using this equipment. Digital Sound Level Meter Radio Jhack Your new Radio Shack Digital Sound LevelMeter precisely measures area noise and othersound level. The meter's digital design andspecial measuring features, such as thebargraph and data hold, ensure pinpointaccuracy for checking any acoustic environment. The meter is lightweight and easy to operate. Your meter also has these features: 3-Digit Liquid Crystal Display—makes it easyto read sound measurements. 21-Dot Analog Bargraph —gives you a visualrepresentation of the measured sound. Mode/Condition Indicators—show you the cur-rent mode and status of the meter. Wide Sound-Measuring Abilities -measuresfrom 50 dB to 126 dB SPL with seven ranges. Average or Maximum Sound Level Display一continuously shows the average or maximumsound level:per second with digits, per 0.2 or 0.5seconds with the bargraph. Tripod Ready—lets you attach the meter to a tri-pod 6.35 mm(14-inch)for more accurate soundmeasurements. Data Hold—lets you freeze a measurement on the display. ⑨1996 InterTAN Inc.All Rights Reserved.Radio Shack is a registered trademarkused by Tandy Corporation. Integrated Averaging—measures the inte-grated average, and holds the maximum soundlevels for a preset period. Under range and Over range indicators—show you when the sound ievel reading is underor over the selected range. A and C Weighting—lets you select either typeof weighting to suit the purpose of the measure-ment. Selectable Bargraph Response—lets youselect a slow(0.5 second)or fast (0.2 second)bargraph response. Peak Level Indication—shows you when themeter registers the maximum leve measurementon the bargraph. Reset Button —lets you clear the current mea-surements from the meter's memory and begin anew measurement. 9-Volt Battery Operation —lets you power the meter with a 9-volt battery. Phono Output Jack —lets you connect themeter toyour stereo systemor testequipment. Low-Battery Indicator —shows you when thebattery needs to be replaced. Set RANGE for the approximate sound level youwant to measure. If you do not know the soundlevel, start with the highest range setting(120)and gradually reduce the setting. When the mea-sured

FAQs

How do you install the battery for the meter?

Set RANGE to OFF, remove the battery compartment cover, place a 9‑volt battery over the red ribbon as shown in the compartment diagram, then replace the cover. If the meter will not be used for a week or more, remove the battery.

What does A-weighting and C-weighting change in the measurements?

WEIGHTING A sets the meter to respond mainly to 500–10,000 Hz for assessing an area’s noise level. WEIGHTING C uses a flatter frequency response mainly across 32–10,000 Hz for measuring sound levels of musical material.

How can you set the sound range and handle under-range or over-range readings?

Choose a RANGE value near the expected sound level; each range spans 20 dB and the set number marks the center. If the measured value is below or above the selected range, under range or over range indicators appear.
