DHVANI THEORY (Ānandavardhana)

WONDERING MINDS PAID CONTENT
Dhvani (Suggestion) is one of the most influential theories in Indian Poetics. It was propounded by the 9th-century Kashmiri scholar Ānandavardhana in his famous work Dhvanyāloka. The theory revolutionized literary criticism by asserting that the essence of poetry lies not in what is directly stated but in what is suggested. According to Ānandavardhana, the soul of poetry is Dhvani (suggested meaning) , while words and literal meanings constitute only its external body.
Meaning of Dhvani
The Sanskrit word Dhvani literally means "sound," "echo," or "resonance." In literary criticism, it refers to the suggested meaning that goes beyond the literal and figurative meanings of words.
Ānandavardhana states that great poetry possesses the power to evoke meanings that are not explicitly expressed. These meanings resonate in the mind of a sensitive reader (Sahridaya) and create aesthetic delight. Poetry therefore becomes an art of suggestion rather than direct statement.
According to him:
"Kāvyasyātmā Dhvaniḥ" (The soul of poetry is Dhvani.)
Words and meanings form the body of poetry, but the suggested meaning gives it life and artistic excellence.
Historical Background
Before Ānandavardhana, Indian critics mainly focused on:
• Alamkāra School – Figures of Speech
• Rīti School – Style
• Guṇa School – Literary Qualities
• Rasa Theory – Aesthetic Emotion
Ānandavardhana accepted the importance of all these elements but argued that none of them alone explains poetic excellence. The true beauty of poetry lies in its ability to suggest deeper meanings and emotions.
His theory was later elaborated by Abhinavagupta, who wrote Dhvanyāloka Locana, a celebrated commentary on Dhvanyāloka.
