Alien inhabitant Welkin struggles to reach the human dimension, despite assuming dimension travel should be effortless. Professor Float notices Welkin’s repeated trouble and questions whether she truly wants to go to Earth. Welkin is reminded she must remain with her host for only three days of Earth time, while the prep classes feel longer. The chapter opens with their dialogue and Welkin’s internal conflict about “Destination, Earth” and doing this.

"Um,"I mumble,"how long is thatagain?” Float's tone is impatient.“Roughlythe same span of time as one bioethicsclass." "Right."I don't say that that soundsway too long. "Do you remember all the instruc-tions?”Float asks. Do I?I think back on the past fewclasses we've spent preparing for thisjourney. They might equal two weeksof Earth time, but it wasn't enough
