The Philistines stood on a ridge ready to fight. The Israelite soldiers stood across the valley on another ridge. A Philistine champion named Goliath stepped forward from the Philistine camp. Goliath was more than nine feet tall and wore heavy bronze armor. His huge spear had an iron spearhead that weighed fifteen pounds. Goliath shouted across the valley to the Israelites,“I am a Philistine, and you are servants of Saul. Choose one man to come down here and fight me! If he kills me, then we will be your servants. But if I kill him, you will be our servants!” Every morning and evening for forty days, Goliath shouted this challenge to the Israelites. And each time Saul and the Israelites were terrified. Now, Jesse’s three oldest sons had joined Saul’s army to fight the Philistines. So Jesse told his youngest son, David,“Take food to your brothers and their captain and bring back areport.” When David arrived at the Israelite camp, he was surprised that everyone there was afraid to fight the giant.
