CVUSD ELEMENTARY READING and LITERACY February 13, 2024 READING is the single most IMPORTANT skill-the FOUNDATIONfor all future LEARNING . Zaner Bloser OUR RESPONSIBILITIES Reading is not natural; it can and must be taught. Background knowledge is as critical to comprehension skills as decoding skills. Foundational skills instruction must be systematic and explicit, beginning with sounds. Instruction must be engaging, through multiple modesand senses . Science-based reading instruction reduces the need for intervention, and allows children to move forward as capable, confident learners.
