Count and Say-Activity Card The Asia Foundation-Let’s Read Surendra Maharjan Use this activity card with the book, Count and Say. Ask children the questions on the following pages before, during, and after reading the story to help spark conversation, imagination, and curiosity. These are only suggestions, ask more and different questions. Have fun and enjoy sharing this wonderful book. Let’s Read! Reading Tip: Ask ”follow-ups” when children respond to questions. For example, Why? Tell me more? And, can you give me an example? Try to extend the conversation. This will help children think more about the story. Before Reading: 1) Let’s count your fingers on one hand. How many? 2) On the other hand. How many? Let’s count my fingers. 3) What things do you count during the day? In your home? Outdoors? At school? During Reading: 1) Have the child answer each question on the page, pointing to each item as they count. 2) Do you see anything else besides the elephant’s trunk that shows one thing? (One hat, one tricycle) . Use same example for other pages. 3) Before turning the page, ask: What number will come next? What do you think the illustrator could draw as an example of that number? After Reading: 1) Which number picture in this story did you like the most? What details do you like on that page? 2) If you could add a number picture to this book, what number would you make your picture for? 3) What would you draw to show that number? (Give the child an opportunity to create the picture if there is time and interest.) Try It! Playing with a partner, one person picks a number between 1 and 10 ,and says,”Count and Say,” and then counts to the number that he or she picked. For example,”Count and say. One, two, three .” The other person then tries to think of an object that has that number of something. The person should respond in the form of a question. For example,”How many wheels does a tricycle have?” The answer is three! Switch roles.
