CORMAC’S GLOSSARY presents a translated and annotated edition of Cormac’s Glossary, prepared by John O’Donovan and edited by Whitley Stokes. The preface explains that the main translation was drawn from Three Irish Glossaries and from manuscripts identified as Codex A and Codex B, preserved in major Irish collections. It clarifies publication sources for additional articles and describes how O’Donovan’s original version is reproduced with limited editor changes, while editorial notes, inserted passages, and corrigenda are handled through standardized notation.

The bulk of the text from which the following translationwas made is printed in the volume entitled Three Irish Glossaries,pp.1—45,from a MS.in the library of the Royal Irish Academywhich I call Codex A.The Additional Articles, now for the firsttime published, are printed from a transcript made by me someseven years ago from the Yellow Book of Lecan,a manuscriptin the library of Trinity.College,Dublin, containing the copy ofCormac's Glossary which I call Codex B. The translation now printed was made by O'Donovan manyyears before his death, and appears never to have been revisedby him after he had acquired the wide and accurate knowledgeof the ancient Irish language which he possessed when I enjoyedthe privilege of knowing and learning from him. This being so,I have thought it my duty to endeavour to print his versionin such form as it would have assumed had he lived to publish it.But wherever I have ventured to make any change substantiallyaffecting the meaning,O'Donovan's words have been given eitherin the text or a foot-note. The transcript of O'Donovan's version, sent out for the pur-pose of the present publication, contained a large body of notes, philological, topographical, and historical. These required muchsifting and abbreviation. But nothing,I think,of importancehas been omitted.O'Donovan's notes are signed thus:—O’D’.Those by the Editor are marked‘Ed.Passages and wordsinserted in O'Donovan's text and notes are inclosed in squarebrackets.Attention is requested to the Corrigenda.
