# Commonwealth Predictions for1984 Dr.Walter E.Hoadley Barbara Mousalam Psychic Economist,Senior Research Fellow,Hoover Institution WEDNESDAY DECEM BER 21I HOPE THAT SOME of the things I pre-dict will happen in 1984 will not cometrue. That is not to say that everything 1foresee will occur;there is a possibilitythese events will not happen. It is not myintention to frighten anyone, only to talkabout the things that may happen. But thefuture is mutable. With our collectiveminds, perhaps there are things we can doto change the course of the world. ## Election Economics1984 Noon,Friday Grand Ballroom,Sberaton Palace Hotel Economists used to count on threethings taking place prior to a presidentialelection:the Fed would ease up on themoney supply to ensure declining interestrates;there would be no tax increase or dis-cussion of changes in social security;andthe candidates'economic policies wouldn'tdiffer very much. But that is not the casein 1984. George Orwell terrified us with his vi-sion of 1984,with the thought-police andall that they represent.Maybe to avoid thefuture that Orwell envisioned requires thatwe exercise more compassion and love andunderstanding and forgiveness in our ownthoughts. How will the upcoming election affectthe economic outlook for 1984?What willbe the consequence of increased defensespending? Will more money be restored toentitlement programs? Are the projecteddeficits as dangerous as the Democratsclaim? Will there be a tax increase?Whatwill happen to interest rates and the valueof the dollar? ## The Decade of Change I predict that the eighties will be a piv-otal time.It will be the turning point formoving into the Aquarian Age.We'removing into a time when we all will live onthis planet together in cooperation andpeace. In the eighties,I predict we will seesuch things as the abolition of the electoralcollege. We will see fixed terms for Su-preme Court justices—they will no longerserve for life.I predict there will be aguarded but more stable peace in the Mid-dle East toward the end of the decade, apeace which will last,I feel, for 14 years.Ialso predict more women will occupy pow-erful political positions. Dr.Hoadley,a globally known econo-mist and financial executive, has addressedThe Commonwealth Club 11 times since1969.He served as Executive Vice Presi-dent and Chief Economist at the Bank ofAmerica from 1968 to 1981.Recognizedas the "dean"of business economists,Dr.Hoadley has written numerous articles onforecasting, global finance, and other eco-nomic subjects. He is currently a senior re-search fellow at the Hoover Institution andmember of The Commonwealth Club Boardof Governors. The professions that I see undergoingthe greatest changes are the medical andthe legal professions.I predict medicalpractice will incorporate the concept ofdeath with dignity.I predict that by theend of the eighties there will be some lim-ited socialized medicine.
