Sep 29, 2026

Friday-speaker radio service content from the Commonwealth Club of California introduces a special speech by Hon. John Ashbrook, addressing the U.S. presidential context around May 25–26 and the Republican stance. The speech recounts Ashbrook’s 1968 support for Richard Nixon and argues that the Nixon Administration did not deliver promised steps to dismantle federal programs. Central focus is the proposed Family Assistance Plan, which the speaker criticizes as expanding the welfare state rather than reforming it.

I am a Republican precisely because theRepublican Party has in the past stoodfirm in behalf of its principles. It has be-lieved in limited government and maxi-mum freedom for the individual. The unfortunate fact is that the NixonAdministration has not taken any of theimportant steps it promised in disman-tling irresponsible federal programs.Inthis refusal to turn back the Great Societyprograms,President Nixon broke faithwith those who had supported him be- cause they desired a change in Washing.ton. By proposing the radical Family Assis-tance Plan, this Administration went farbeyond anything which had been ad-vocated in the past by the architects of theGreat Society and the New Frontier.Presi-dent Nixon called clearly for a guaran-teed annual income, rejecting his cam-paign promise to take men and womenoff welfare rolls and place them on pay-rolls. Only Rhetorie Conservative Here again, the rhetoric was conserva-tive,but the proposal was one designed toenhance the welfare state, not limit andreverse it.This P
