W O R K B O O K CNA Test-Coaching This workbook was created to identify and strengthen your CNA Skills and refine your test-taking strategies to help you pass the CNA Exam the FIRST time! Written by Patricia Laramee, RN Welcome You want to be a CNA-it's a calling that goes deeper than education. You can feel it in your soul-that burning need to help others in distress, that deep desire to make a difference. It isn't something that can be "turned off" at the end of the day. You are a"Giver", a genuine "Carer", and that calling isn't something that can be ignored. But, first, you have to pass the state exam. And that probably causes you some anxiety-which is why you are here. Together, we can overcome your fears, help you focus on your strengths and learn what the test is all about. Together, we can take the steps necessary to achieve your dream! So, take a deep breath, turn the page and step into your future. Happy Learning! Patricia Get to Know The Test The test (in most states) consists of two sections: the written exam and the skills exam. The Written exam is a 60 question multiple choice test. The questions are mainly presented as scenarios: What would the CNA do? The Skills exam will direct you to perform a certain number of skills in front of an RN, who will judge your performance. You must pass both sections to be certified. Which is harder? Actually, if you are well-prepared...NEITHER test should be hard. But that's the trick, isn't it? Knowing what to study so you can be wellprepared on test day! But, if you don't know what is on the test, then you won't know how to study for it. And if you can't study for it, how can you be wellprepared?? It isn't as hopeless as it looks because that's where we come in! We know the test. Inside and out. Our mission is to help you find your strengths and weaknesses, so you study more effectively. So, at test time, YOU can actually feel like you are well-prepared, too! And that will ultimately help you pass the test-because to you, it will feel EASY! The Written Test A lot of students dread the written test the most. This is because you are most familiar with written exams. And you have probably had a few bad testing experiences in your past education. So, because you know more about this type of test, you may genuinely be afraid of it. But your fear may also come from the amount of content you might be tested on! There was a LOT to learn in class-but which of those topics are going to be on the test? It just isn't practical to try to study EVERYTHING! To get prepared for the written exam, you need to know WHICH topics are covered, HOW the questions are going to be presented and WHY they are looking for certain answers. So, let's take a look at what the written test is going to be about. . . then discover some testtaking strategies that will help you answer the questions. Ready? The 5 Main Points The questions on the written test will cover 5 main categories, as follows: 1. Know Your Role 2. Know Your Normals 3. Patient Rights 4. Safety (Yours & the Patient's) 5. Infection Control So, what does this even mean? This is just a list of vague topics that don't really mean much by [themselves...so](themselves...so) why don't we go a bit deeper, shall we? Keep going to learrn more about what each of these topics mean...and see some sample questions that would cover each topic. Two to Do There are two rules that the CNA must follow when assigned to do a task either by the nurse or on the care plan. These 2 rules are simple: 1 . Perform the task as ordered OR 2. Notify the nurse That's it! If you cannot perform the task exactly as ordered, you notify the nurse. Those are the ONLY two choices a CNA has. Period. End of discussion. You are not allowed to change the task or modify it in any way. You are not allowed to decide that something should else should be done or decide you are not going to do the task
