CHRONICLE OF A PRESIDENCY - I. RECORD OF SHOCKS - Limericks and Nonpartisan Reflection

Sep 28, 2026

A political and civic memoir in verse records shocks and reversals during a U.S. presidential era, using observations, references to investigations, and nonpartisan appeals for democratic repair. The narrative frames each episode—from attacks on journalists and executive conduct to policy reversals and institutional responses—as a pattern of damage requiring collective, practical action. It combines analysis, satire, and limerick-like humor to urge readers to promote the best, address infrastructure and domestic threats, and defend self-government.

RECORD OF SHOCKS Books, indictments,Mueller's REPORT;sane attempts tosubdue tweet-rants,hear rash policies, see reversals of emission laws;watch_the repeated Senate shoot-downs of Congressionalbill...These have become daily,as honest journalists are attackedunless they praise the current occupant of the White House. Do I dare add my two cents?Yes!I must,in fact, lest we forget, having been shocked over and over since 2016,at how bad eachincident was when it occurred.Medical professionals have describedthe pathology influencing the President's conduct. We simply observeit—with shock, dismay, outrage,or all three. My purpose is to record—like a ship's captain in a log—whatAmericans have been experiencing on this perilous journey.Upholding democracy is that journey.Just as 19h century sailorsfeared destruction from thunderous icebergs,we fear effects of aNorth Pole melting fast today.Climate, like this presidency, hasforced us to confront more extremes. But the American governmental system —however battered bycorruption or deceit—provides TIME to recover what has beenstolen:the wonderful fruits of a free country which most of the worldused to admire,or join legally, learning English and working in asociety built mostly by immigrants. Having worked as anadministrator in a foreign country,I have observed how hostile andclosed another nation can be,even to applicants labeled “qualified”:the melting pot there had a very tight lid,not designed for easyremoval. With the next presidential term approaching,we are guaranteedthe chance to try to PROMOTE THE BEST,not enable the worst. And though our meritocracy has limits, like any organizing socialprinciple,it sure beats oligarchy, autocracy, communism or anarchy. If we fight NOW for the freedom which this nation does,in fact, guarante,…if we fight..,that gift of ruling oneself will not be squandered. As one of millions who have descended from such a fightand benefitted,I want to keep it alive.Past injustices and criminaljustice problems weigh us down,I know. But correcting—ourselves, illegalities, irregularities, whatever—is always possible, and inherentlyAmerican:no other system has yet short-circuited ours Given the recklessness we witness (it replaces more logicaldecision-making,shared with elected officials),I pose this question:how is it that with peace,a good economy and a president-builder,we see hatred, more domestic terrorism and a neglectedinfrastructure? It's time to reply with nonpartisan acts, maybe making the WhiteHouse great again!Rhyme and humor are tools I use.If a collection oflimericks*can provide needed relief, yet also serve as a spur, thensimple verse can be another means to address national concerns. Frank Bruni,in"We Will Never Ever Be Rid of Trump,"examines in his essay probable future harm:to the post-presidency(NYT,A29,9/10/19).Rachel Maddow's expertise and satire provideexcellent coverage of complex events.David Axelrod has warnedagainst the dangers of merely staying outraged(our emotionsgrabbed),of not developing timely strategies to counteract executiveabuse(the “emergency”shutdown, misallocations, etc.)May the nextpresident —whoever wins—take on the job of REPAIRINGDAMAGE DONE TO AMERICAN DEMOCRACY.The crowdsize for such an effort might just turn out to be "bigger than the worldhas ever seen”"...The youngest already
