Everywhere hurt—the pain, a dull throbbing that penetrated every cell of my body. I was supposed to be dead. I remembered fading into oblivion on the hospital bed. I had watched my body from above as the monitor flatlined. The light was there. It had called to me, and I had answered. Did Igo to hell? Was I to experience pain for the rest of eternity because I didn’t join some religion? I opened my eyes and saw filtered light coming through some sort of brown cloth. The blanket was lightweight and prickly. As a chill ran down my body, I suddenly realized I was only wearing a pair of shorts. I could feel a softer sheet under me, but it definitely wasn’t a hospital bed. The cushioning was like lying on a pile of straw or soft sticks. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Was I back in my body, being prepared for a cremation? That didn’t make sense either. Sitting up, I found that, alongside the pain, my body was wracked with weakness. Just the effort of pushing my weight upright was exhausting, like doing tricep dips with 100lb weights atop my shoulders. As I slowly struggled to lift myself off of the mat I was lying on, an intense throbbing started to pound at my temples. Nevertheless, I persisted until the coarse, itchy sheet slid off my face. As I looked around, my brain shuddered to a halt, my jumbled thoughts struggling to comprehend what I saw. I was on a narrow bed that crackled slightly as I moved. My first thought was a straw mattress, but that wasn't quite right. The smell was more earthy. The walls—made of a light grey stone—were held together by mortar. Though together was a stretch, as some places had too much and others were crumbling under the strain of the roughly hewn stone.
