Charles Darwin is presented as a transformative figure who advanced evolutionary thought through compelling evidence and clear scientific writing. The text explains evolution as more than speculation by introducing natural selection, likened to selective breeding, and argues that scientific progress has since strengthened the evidence for evolution. It emphasizes that scientists investigate and correct mistakes, and that shared instruments and methods are used across medicine, health research, resource studies, agriculture, crime investigation, environmental study, and evolution.

Scientific literacy and superstition

Charles Darwin by Jim Strayer, science educator and author February 12,1809,is the birth date of Charles Darwin.Hechanged scientific thought forever, first, with his evidence on evo-lution,and then with his ability to write so that everyone couldunderstand his scientific books. His Origin of Species was not the first book on evolution.Theidea goes back to antiquity, and the evolutionary notions of othershad been widely discussed since the early 1800s.What Darwinactually accomplished for evolution was to make it more than justspeculation. He was the first to discover the compelling evidencefor evolution, and to show how evolutionary thinking could beused as the basis for scientific investigation. He also provided aplausible cause,or mechanism, for evolution. This was his principle of "natural selection,"which he explainedby analogy with selective breeding in agriculture. The breederselects the kind of animal or plant he or she wants from a varyinggroup of organisms(artificial selection),and subsequent genera-tions become more and more like the kind he or she chooses.Darwin proposed that something very much like that occurs innature, and, therefore, called it"natural selection." Darwin did his work 135 years ago.It should be apparent, evento the most uninformed, that advances have been made in the evi-dence that supports evolution.Charles Darwin did not have thebenefit of computers,ultra-sound,the electron microscope, radioactive dating,X-ray,plate tectonics,DNA sequencing,or anyother scientific advancement of the last 100 years. Pasteur,Einstein,Newton, and Darwin, like all scientists, mademistakes. These mistakes were and are being investigated andcorrected by other scientistsThat is what science is,the use ofevidence to support or change a theory. There has been no theo-ry advanced to explain the diversity of life and the physicalchanges in the universe other than evolution. The scientific instruments that are used in the study of medi-cine,immunology,and other health-related fields are the sameinstruments that are used to study evolution. The instruments thatare used to search for natural resources, develop agriculture, advance animal husbandry, investigate crimes, and examine theenvironment are also the same as are used to study evolution. Most scientists believe that Darwin's greatest contribution toour world was the theory of natural selection. As a result of this continued on page 2 Nonsense Inoculation by Joseph F.Bohren,Ph.D.,active member ofSPLASH and the Tampa Bay Skeptics It is understandable that superstition may prevail in past and presentcultures with a high level ofiliteracy and ignorance.Humans seemprone to seek patterns in nature and explanations for natura phe-nomena.Absent a strong scientific tradition, superstitions and para-normal explanations arise to answer perplexing questions.Theseoften develop into formal religious traditions. As a more sophisticat-ed and literate society evolves, scientific discoveries are made orknowledge is imported from other cultures, and understanding of thenatural world advances, but not necessarily among all citizens. We Americans live in a paradoxical society. We have high liter-acy,free public education,a variety of private educational options, intellectual freedom, abundant higher education opportunities, graduate programs second to none, fantastic progress in scienceand technology, free public libraries full of great books,a mind-boggling plethora of all kinds of media, immediate access tounbelievable information via the Internet, freedom of expressionand exchange of ideas, and rapid data processing capability inthe hands of average people. At the same time,we experience afrighteningly high level of scientificiliteracy and acceptance ofsupernatural, paranormal, and superstitious explanations of nat-ural phenomena. How could this happen? The more important question is,What do we do about it?Children are naturally inquisitive. They want to know why and howhings happen or work as they do.Ther

FAQs

What does the text say Charles Darwin changed about evolutionary thinking?

It states that Darwin made evolution more than speculation by providing compelling evidence and by showing how evolutionary thinking could guide scientific investigation.

How is natural selection explained in the passage?

Natural selection is explained by analogy with selective breeding: breeders choose from varying organisms, and later generations become more like the chosen kind.

According to the text, how should people respond when scientific answers are not available?

It suggests using interim responses like “I don’t know, but let’s try to find out,” and deferring difficult questions until serious effort can be made.
