Chapter 4 - One-Point Perspective - One-Point Linear Perspective

Oct 23, 2026

Chapter 4 explains one-point linear perspective for drawing rooms and objects using a single vanishing point. It defines key elements such as the plan, elevation, height, station point, picture plane, ground line, horizon line, and vanishing point, then walks through direct drawing steps: choosing point of view, placing the horizon and vanishing point, drawing vanishing lines, sketching and repeating shapes, and finishing with texture. It also covers equal shapes and division, plus trace points and step-by-step plan projection with the pull-down technique.

# Chapter 4:One-Point Perspective One-Point Linear Perspective One Point Perspective Theory Plan:The floor plan of the object/room(top down view). Elevation:The wallof the object/room(side view). Height(h):The distance your eye is from the ground. Station point(sp):Representation of where your are standing, and the direction you are lookingin relation to the object/room. Picture Plane(pp):an imaginary giant paper/canvas/glass where you will project yourobject/room to.This can also be considered the surface of your paper you are drawing on. Ground Line (ql):The line on the ground where you put your picture plane. Vanishing point(vp):the dot where everything that is parallel to your view goes. Horizon Line(hl):Eye level(el). Cone of Vision:a 60∞angle range that objects still appear normal within your drawing, outsidethe Cone of Vision objects in your drawing appear distorted. ## One Point Perspective TheoryDirect Drawing Step by Step ### a)Decide Point-of-View Choose a view of the object(environmenf),looking at one side of the object,or parallelto one side of the object.Any other view isnot one-point perspective. In the plan view below there are only 6 viewsfrom "a"that are one-point perspective:parallel or perpendicular to the objectschoose one of these views. The other 2would be looking straight up(called thezenith)or straight down(called the nadir). c)Horizon Line: If you are not looking directly up or down, the vanishing point(vp)is on your horizonline(hl),draw a horizon line. | vp | | --- | | | hl b)Place Vanishing Point: pp The picture plane(pp)represents yourdrawing surface(paper).Place a dot on yourpaper, anywhere but on the edge or directlyin the center(for better composition).Thisis your one vanishing point. c)Vanishing Lines: Draw vanishing lines radiating straight outfrom vanishing point(vp)to use as guides foryour one-point perspective drawing. e)Sketch Shapes: Draw shapes that would be repeated to the vanishing point (vp).Close the shape by repeating it. ### f)Repeat Shapes: Repeat the shapes until you have the object you want to draw blocked in. 9)Finish: Finish the drawing by adding smaller shapes and texture. ## Equal Shapes and Division | | | --- | ### a)Find the Middle: Without measuring the distance, you can find themiddle of a boxby crossing lines from the corners(subdivide). This technique of subdivision alsoworks in perspective to find the "perspectivecenter"of a box. a a a ### b)Find Equal Distance: Knowing how to subdivide your box, youcan find equal distance in perspective. a a Equal Shapes and Division:More Complicated Division a)Find the Middle of Each Shape:Find the next shape of (a)by finding the middle of (b). ### a)To find a shape within a shape: Find the center of (b),use this as your reference point to find(a)again. a Chapter 4 Trace Points and Vanishing Lines At any vanishing point you can create avanishing line.It is similar in function to ahorizon line, all parallel planes that are alsoparallel to the vanishing line will disappear atthe vanishing line.At any point along thisvanishing line you can put a trace point.Trace points are used for angled planes, likeangled rooftops and roads that go uphill ordown hill. # One-Point Linear Perspective THIS 丁RAW¹N6IS uSiNG 3 SEis F VPs VP ②HoR1ZON LINE VP① VP③UP CN THE HORI0N 4NE ②VP ABOU HORIZON LIN A LINE WTt 中E 1P THE H6R 1ZOKIINE③VP LNDER tE HOR12oN LNe AL/N龙u171THE VP oN THE H0 2oN LIN∈ Chapter 4 ## Step by step examples of a drawingin one-point perspective Here we've chosen a view looking straightdown at the nadir.but all the elements in thedrawing are still parallel to our view so theyare in one-point perspective. FAQs

What is one-point perspective and how is it determined by the point of view?

One-point perspective uses a view looking at one side of the object, or parallel/perpendicular to one side. Other views are not one-point perspective.

Which elements are necessary to set up one-point linear perspective?

You need the plan, elevation, station point, picture plane, ground line, horizon line, and the vanishing point. The horizon line is used when you are not looking directly up or down.

How do you construct a drawing using the pull-down plan projection technique?

Draw the picture plane and a horizon line, then project lines from the station point to locate the vanishing point. Transfer the plan and use the projected guides to build shapes in perspective.
