# Catalogue of an Exhibition ofWork by Modern BelgianAartists Anonymous B IB LI0L IF E Copyright BiblioLife,LLC This book represents a historical reproduction of a work originally published before1923 that is part of a unique project which provides opportunities for readers, educatorsand researchers by bringing hard-to-find original publications back into print atreasonable prices.Because this and other works are culturally important,we have madethem available as part of our commitment to protecting, preserving and promoting theworld's literature. These books are in the"public domain”and were digitized and madeavailable in cooperation with libraries, archives, and open source initiatives around theworld dedicated to this important mission. We believe that when we undertake the difficult task of re-creating these works asattractive, readable and affordable books,we further the goal of sharing these workswith a global audience, and preserving a vanishing wealth of human knowledge. Many historical books were originally published in small fonts, which can make themvery difficult to read.Accordingly,in order to improve the reading experience of thesebooks,we have created“enlarged print”versions of our books.Because of font sizevariation in the original books, some of these may not technically qualify as “large print”books,as that term is generally defined;however,we believe these versions provide anoverall improved reading experience for many. THE sixth of the series of exhibitions of modern foreign art to be held inthese Galleries has been arranged under circumstances very diferentfrom others prevously held Usually I have visited the capital of thecountry whose artists have been invited to exhibit, and have been able to formthere a strong and representative Commttee, which has undertaken the selectionof the pictures,&c.For obvious reasons this has not been possible on the presentoccasIon,and it may be wondered how a Belgian exhibition could be secured atall Neither would it have been if it had not been for the valuable co-operation and assistance of M Paul Lambotte, the Director for Fine Arts in theBelgian Ministry of Science and Arts By his aid an exhibition, which he humselfsays 1s qute representative, has been arranged. At the outbreak of war exhibitions of Belgian pictures, which were afterwardssent to England, were on vew at Venice,Florence,Lyons,&c In this country, too, there was a considerable quantity of excellent statuary on exhibton. It isfrom these exhibitions that the majority of pictures and statuary have been selectedThere are,of course, many gaps, and it is to be regretted that some of the moreprominent Belgian artists are not exhibitors M Lambotte's own words in thepreface of the catalogue of another exhibition recently held in Cardiff may bequoted here with some effect一 "In the collection here exhibited may be perceived the chief characteristicqualites of Belgian panting, power and brllance of colouring in freshhealthy pigment, with the strength and solid feeling of life making itsappeal everywhere In the sculpture, and even in the works in blackand white, there may be observed a simlar impresslon of plasticity andsensibthty of touch Belgian art is qute different from British, andretains throughout its signtfcance and its native flavour At first sightit may disconcert the spectator, but longer and more careful study"wi
