Building an Audience: Fandom as Unpaid Advertisers in Asian Web Novel Spaces Seemin Syed Abstract While fan communities and their complexities have already been abstractly explored in scholarly literature, Asian web novel translation groups present an interesting space for analysis as a niche imported cultural product that was made widely accessible to English speakers by multilingual fans as part of a gift economy, rather than through market expansion by the novels’ intellectual property owners. Exploring the history of online web novel translation websites like Chrysanthemum Garden, Wuxiaworld, and WebNovel, this article uses a combination of the author’s first-hand experience as an editor of these translated works, as well as academic parallels in digital culture literature, to explore the transition of fan communities that value transformational work without capital to an emerging market demographic, ripe for labour and consumer exploitation. It is no wonder, then, that the internet has invigorated fandom communities, allowing people from all over the globe to connect over their mutual appreciation for their favourite books, movies, TV shows, and games. This appreciation can manifest as transformative works derived from the original and created by fans in every medium. This act of social creation adds value to media—and the online Asian media translation community is no different. Fans produce amateur translations of web novels, comics, and shows from East Asian countries like China, Japan, and South Korea for English-speaking audiences all over the world, developing knowledge and techniques of media labour that are freeing in some ways and exploitative in others. Web novel fan translations develop complex layers of enjoyment, community, and culture around niche media products; and in doing so, they inadvertently transform a translator’s free labour, voluntary precarity, and deep emotional and social involvement in the culture of the media they produce/consume into unpaid advertising for capital. A translation passion project based on collective interest built a community that developed behavioural and financial expectations for each other until international capitalist Intellectual Property rights holders created a breeding ground for speculation and fear about what would come next. Explored here through posts, memories, and message boards, what happened in the Asian web novel space seems like it could happen to any born-digital, grassroots, sui generis community—and it begins, as it always seems to, in one niche corner of the Internet. Wuxiaworld, a website created in 2014 as a translation group specializing in Chinese web novels in the “wuxia” genre (“adventure” featuring ancient Chinese martial artists), is currently one of the giants ofthis community. When it first launched, the site was one of what felt like hundreds of other WordPress sites and translation groups, most consisting of only a single member, whose production workflows would include translation, editing, and publishing the novel(s) they were interested in, chapter by chapter, on websites they made and maintained. Most translators also regularly socialized with and read translations from other translation groups. As such, they viewed their labour as a gift to the community, a mutual exchange for the translations they enjoyed reading from other groups. This blending of “consumer” and “producer” in the relatively small and informal fandom environment meant that there were few barriers between translators and readers.
