For rotary lawnmower safety,USA Standard Safety Specifications for Power Lawn Mowers specify a maximum blade tip speedof 19,000 feet per minute, primarily to reduce the hazard from thrown objects. Rotary lawnmower manufacturers select the governed top speed of the engine based on.the length and design of the cutterblade and design of other mower parts. All rotary lawnmowers should be checked for conformance to the USA Standard Safety Specifications for Power Lawn Mowerson blade tip speed,if the engine is repaired or'replaced,or if mower parts are changed. Dirt and grass clippings,or other debris,in cooling fins or governor parts can affect engine speed.See cleaning instruc-tions in Section 3. CAUTION TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL STARTING always remove the spark plug before working on the engine or equipment driven by theeengine or remove cable from spark plug and insert terminal in V-notch in cylinder head cover. DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE IN AN ENCLOSED AREA.Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide,an odorless and deadly poison.DO NOT FILL GASOLINE TANK WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING.Spilling gasoline on a hot engine may cause a fire or explosion. FAQs

What key safety warnings must be followed before starting the engine?

Do not run the engine at excessive speeds. Remove the spark plug (or disconnect the cable) to prevent accidental starting, and never run the engine in an enclosed area due to carbon monoxide risk.

How should the engine be started using a rope starter or a 12-volt electric starter?

For a rope starter, place the knot in the pulley notch, wind the rope clockwise, prime the engine with the choke closed, then open the choke gradually. For a 12-volt electric starter, press the starter button on the powered equipment and open the choke gradually when the engine starts.

What maintenance schedule is recommended for oil and the air cleaner?

Check oil level before starting and after every 5 hours; change oil after the first 5 hours, then every 25 hours. Clean and re-oil the foam pre-cleaner at 3-month intervals or every 25 hours (whichever comes first).

What should be done if the cooling system is clogged or the combustion chamber needs cleaning?

If grass or chaff clogs the cooling system, remove the blower housing and clean regularly to prevent overheating. Clean the combustion chamber every 100–300 hours by removing deposits from the cylinder head and combustion chamber, then reassemble and tighten screws per the specified sequence.
