Revised edition content introduces Booker T. Washington’s early life, placing his birth in slavery and noting that slave birth dates were often not recorded. It describes the Virginia plantation where he lived with his mother Jane and stepfather Washington Ferguson, the one-room shack with a dirt floor and imperfect door, and the log-cabin setting. The text emphasizes childhood hardships: lack of glass windows, cracks in walls, sleeping on the floor without a bed, and the absence of a life period devoted to play.
