Awakened undead traits describe a player-character style undead state with specific mechanical benefits and narrative hooks. The text outlines ability score increase, dead immortality with rapid healing and normal hit dice, past life transformation to another living race, and core undead rules for immunity, exhaustion, eating, and inactivation instead of sleep. It also covers darkvision limitations and language access, followed by a subrace structure that begins defining Skeleton types and their origin as raised minions or cursed beings.

Some undead are born into freedom, whileothers earn it or have it thrust upon them.Re-gardless,all undead that have freedom greatlycherish it,as the reminders of what could easilyhappen were they not fortunate enough to pos-sess free will abound throughout history.Manyconsider it their sacred duty to free other mind-less undead,or simply to dispatch them wher-ever they may be found. The reasoning isstraightforward enough:a final rest awarded toall mortals is greatly preferential to eternal slav-ery to the likes of a short-sighted,megalomania-cal wizard. # DEAD AND REBORN Typically having no lands to call their own, undead with an awakened sense of self aretypically perpetual foreigners, wanders in a landand often a time not their own.Compoundingmatters, most mortal cultures carry within theman instinctual fear of death and the dead, andmany associate necromancy specifically withdark tidings. This forms a wall of (often well-earned)prejudice and hatred that sentientundead find themselves up against, and manyundead choose to hide their necrotic naturesbehind clothes, masks, and ungent perfumeswhen journeying into civilization. # FALLEN HoME,FORGOTTEN PAST For many awakened undead, the past is a distanthomeland to which they may never return,hold-ing names and faces now partially-forgotten,andloves and lives as dead as they are.The anguishof this loss is enough to drive many mad, butothers use this rage and pain as a source ofpower and drive, carrying them further on theroad to whatever dark destiny awaits. Depending on composition, humanoid undeadtypically range a wide gamut from 20 to 300pounds,and may possess empty eyes,a coloredflame-like magical animus in their sockets, orharrowed, surprisingly mortal eyes burning withan inner fire.Hair (if they have it at all)is usuallylank, dark, and wrought with grime and grave- dirt that amount of cleansing will fully remove.Frequently, entire countries, customs, and undead leverage what companions they mayhave to bridge this epoch-long communicationgap. # UNDEAD NAMES Many undead that awaken into sentience preferto keep the names they held in their mortal lives. For others, however, their mortal names are for-gotten or have lost meaning. These undead oftenadopt nicknames given to them by their formermasters or present companions, and hold themto be as true as any other creature's birth name.
