FAQs

How should the vowels A, I, O, and U be pronounced in Austro-German Latin?

A uses a relaxed “ah” sound, I is an “ee” sound, O is a European closed “o”, and U is pronounced like “oo” as in “school”. The guide also lists specific “never” cases to avoid common substitutions.

When is C pronounced as [ts] in this guide?

C is pronounced as [ts] before E, I, AE, and OE (e.g., pacem, benedicimus). At other times it takes a “k” sound.

What rules does the guide give for pronouncing S, X, and XC?

S is “z” before vowels but “s” before consonants and at word ends. X is “kz” before vowels and “ks” before consonants or at the end of words. XC is “ksk” before O, A, or U, but “ktz” before E.
