Archetypes & Strange Attractors explores how archetypal psychology can be understood through chaos-theory concepts, treating symbolic life as a system with nonlinear dynamics. It connects psychodynamics, individuation, complexes, and the transcendent function to chaos processes such as sensitive dependence, bifurcations, fractal structure, and strange attractors. The discussion extends to symbols and their shadow aspects, linking Jung’s views to ideas from Tillich, Merton, Ricoeur, and Heidegger, and emphasizes interpretation methods for integrating projections and the shadow.

FAQs

How does the book connect Jungian archetypes with chaos theory?

It frames symbolic and psychodynamic processes as nonlinear systems, relating archetypal structures to chaos concepts like sensitive dependence, bifurcations, fractal dimensions, and strange attractors.

What is covered under psychodynamics in the book?

The psychodynamics section reviews archetypes, synchronic and diachronic individuation, complexes, the structure of the psyche, and the transcendent function, culminating in a conclusion.

What does the book say about symbols and their shadow side?

It discusses the province and general introduction of symbols, then develops the shadow side by covering personal, collective, and archetypal shadow, including how to integrate the shadow through withdrawing projections and comparing interpretive approaches.
