APUSH UNIT 3 REVIEW GUIDE (1754–1800) For Students Preparing for the AP® United States History Exam | 10-17%
of the APUSH exam | The third unit of the AP® United States History (APUSH) course focuses on the period from 1754 to 1800, spanning from the French and Indian War to the election of Thomas Jefferson as president.
This unit is eligible to be assessed on every portion of the exam (including the DBQ) . | | --- | --- | THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR (THE SEVEN YEARS’WAR IN NORTH AMERICA) In the 1700s, the population of the Thirteen Colonies had outgrown the Atlantic Coast and began expanding westward. Some British colonists, in search of fresh, fertile farmland, crossed the Appalachian Mountains to settle in the Ohio River Valley. The presence of British colonists created tensions with the French, who claimed the area (but did not settle it) . This conflict resulted in the French and Indian War (1754–1763), in which Britain defeated France and laid claim to the entire eastern half of the North American continent. Although the French and Indian War ended the threat that France presented to the British colonies, it increased tensions between Great Britain and its North American colonies over the discontinuation of salutary neglect (non-enforcement of trade laws) . THE ROAD TO REVOLUTION After the French and Indian War, the British government, deep in debt, resolved that the colonists should help pay for these debts that were left over from the war. Parliament (the British representative body) passed the Sugar Act, which placed new taxes on foreign sugar, ending the longstanding policy of salutary neglect. While there was some resistance to the Sugar Act, colonists were especially enraged when Parliament passed the Stamp Act, which required legal documents to be printed on paper bearing tax stamps. Colonists protested that the Stamp Act was taxation without representation. They denied Parliament’s power to tax the colonies directly without the consent of the colonial legislatures. | QUICK REFERENCE: THE ROAD TO REVOLUTION | | | --- | --- | | STAMP ACT (1765) | Placed a direct tax on documents and paper products in the colonies | | QUARTERING ACT (1765) | Required colonists to provide food and housing for British troops | | TEA ACT (1773) | Gave the British East India Company a monopoly for selling tea to colonists | | COERCIVE ACTS (1774) | Closed the Boston Port and placed Massachusetts under martial law | Parliament also provoked the colonists by passing the Quartering Act, which forced colonists to provide food and housing for British troops who were stationed in the colonies without the colonists’ consent. After Parliament passed the Tea Actin 1773, members of the Sons of Liberty boarded tea-laden ships and dumped the entire cargo into Boston Harbor. In response to what is remembered today as the Boston Tea Party, Parliament passed the Coercive Acts, which closed the Boston Port and placed the Massachusetts Colony under military rule. These acts, which colonists referred to as the“Intolerable Acts,” set in motion the chain of events that led to the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR ~~ ~~ The Revolutionary War began in 1775 with armed confrontations between British troops and colonial “minutemen” in Lexington, Massachusetts. Shortly after, Congress placed George Washington in command of a Continental Army. Not all colonists supported independence. Those who backed Britain called themselves Loyalists, while those who favored independence styled themselves as Patriots. France was the first European nation to recognize the United States and sign a treaty of alliance. French military and financial support provided essential help for George Washington’s perseverence and military the Patriot cause. After the successful encirclement of a British force at Yorktown, leadership were crucial to the success of the the British recognized American independence in the Treaty
