Step-by-step guidance for using the API Freshwater Master Test Kit to monitor and control aquarium water chemistry. The manual explains pH as a measure of acidity, outlines weekly testing needs, and gives kit limits for both standard and high-range pH. It provides clear directions for mixing solutions, reading color charts in bright light, and selecting recommended pH targets for different fish types. It also instructs on ammonia testing, including how to interpret results and reduce ammonia using biological filter support and water changes.

# To remove childproof safety caps: Push down on cap while turning. | pH TEST | | --- | ## Why Test pH? pH is the measure of acidity of water.A pH reading of 7.0 isneutral.A pH higher than 7.0 is alkaline, anda pH lower than 7.0is acidic.Maintaining the qquanum af the proper pH ensuresopfimal water qualiy. The pH should be tested weekly, sincenatural matenials in the aquarium [such as fish waste anduneaten food)can cause pH changes. ## Testing Tips The minimumpH reading for this kit is 6.0 and the maximumis 7.6.Under extreme water conditions, readings below the minimumwill read 6.0 and above the maximum will read 7.6.pHadjustments outside the range of this kit willnot show anychanges unfilthe pH of the aquarium water is within the range ofthis kit. When keeping livebearers, goldfish,African Cichlids ormarine fish &invertebrates use the API HIGH RANGE pH TEST KIT. ## Directions 1.Fill a clean test tube with 5mlof water to be tested (to theline on the tube). 2.Add 3 drops of pH Test Solution, holding dropper botlleupside down in a completely vertical position to assureuniformity of drops. 3.Cap the test tube &invetfube several times to mix solution 4.Read the test results by comparing the color of the solution tothe pH Color Chart. The tube should be viewed ina wel-litarea against the white area of the chart. The closest matchindicates the pH of the water sample. ## Recommended pH Levels A pH of 7.0 is ideal when keeping a community aquariumcontaining a vanety of tropical fish.Goldfish and livebearersprefer apH of7.5.Many Amazonian fish, like angefish and neontetras, prefer apH of 6.5to 6.8.Mollies and swordtails thrive at pH 7.2 to7.5.To raise or lower the pH of a freshwater aquarium, useAPI pH UP8 or pH DOWNO.To automatically adjust pH to apreset level, use APIPROPER pH⑧6.5,7.0,or 7.5. # HIGH RANGE pH TEST ## Why Test pH? pH is the measure of acidity of water.A pH reading of 7.0 isneutral.A pH higher than 7.0 is alkaline, and apH lower than 7.0is acidic.Maintaining the aquarum af the proper pH ensuresoptimal water quality. The pH should be tested weekly, sincenatural materials in the aquarium (such as fish waste anduneaten food)can cause pH changes. ## Testing Tips The minimum pH reading for this kit is7.4 and the maximum is 8.8.Under extreme water conditions, readings below the minimumwill read 7.4 and above the maximum will read 8.8.pHadjustments outside he range of this kitwill not show anychanges until the pHof the aquarium wateris within the range ofthis kit ## Directions 1.Flla clean test tube with 5ml of water to be tested (to theline on the tube]. 2.Add 5 drops of High Range pHTest Solution, holding dropperbotile upside down ina completely vertical position toassure uniformity of drops. 3.Cap the test tube &invert tube several times to mix solution. 4.Read the test results by companng the color of the solutionto the High Range pH Color Chart. The tube should beviewed in a wellit area against the white area of the chart. The closest match indicates the pH of the water sample.Rinse the test tube with clean water after use. ## Recommended pH Levels A pH of 7.5 is ideal for most live-beaning fish, such as molies &swordtails.Goldfish will also thive at apH of7.5.Afnican cichlidsprefer a pH of 8.2.Marine fish &invertebrates require a pHbetween 8.2-8.4.To raise or lower the pH of a freshwateraquanium, use APlpH UP or pH DOWN.Also,API PROPER pH7.5may be used to automatically adjust &hold pH at 7.5.PROPERpH 8.2 may be used in African cichlid and saltwater aquaniums. | AMMONIA TEST | | --- | ## Why Test for Ammonia? Fish continually release ammonia(NH₃)directly into theaquanium/pond through their gills, urine, and solid waste.Uneaten food and other decaying organic mafter also addammonia to the water.A natural mechanism exists that controlsammonia in the aquarium/pond-the biologica fiter. However,as with any natura process, imbolances can occur. So,testingfor the presence of toxic ammonia is essential.Amm

FAQs

How often should the pH in a freshwater aquarium be tested?

Test pH weekly. Natural materials such as fish waste and uneaten food can cause pH to change.

What are the minimum and maximum pH values the standard pH test kit can read?

The standard pH test kit reads from 6.0 to 7.6. Readings below the minimum appear as 6.0, and above the maximum appear as 7.6.

How do you read and interpret ammonia test results from the kit?

After mixing the solutions and waiting for color development, compare the solution color to the ammonia color chart under bright light. The closest match indicates the ammonia level in ppm (mg/L).

What should be done if ammonia levels are high in an aquarium or pond?

Continue testing if levels remain high (e.g., around 4 ppm or mg/L), perform a water change of 25% or more, and follow the kit’s recommended measures to reduce ammonia and nitrite risk.
