Reﬂectingona decade working for the best photography magazine on the planet, I’m reminded again that when it comes to camera technology, you assume things at your peril. (One’s reminded of the old saying‘assume’ makes an ‘ass outofu and me’.) Who could have predicted that compact cameras would roar back, for example, not to mention superzoom/bridge compacts? Many purists tended to look down on bridge cameras, bemoaning the optical compromises needed to stuff along zoom lens into a(relatively)compact body;but people kept buying them. Indeed, Sony has updated the agedRX10 IV, one of the best bridge cameras ever made (see page 8). And who could have foreseen that more and more younger consumers would tire of taking photos on their blandly predictable smartphones, turning instead to analogue photography or even point-and-shoot digital compacts of yore, with their puny speciﬁcations? That’s not to say that smartphones are somehow becoming less popular for photography, but the consumer is proving to be unpredictable, and sometimes downright contrary. Of course, many trends are (broadly) playing out as predicted: generative AI will only get better, soit remains an existential threat to photography as we know it, while innovative smaller companies continue to get swallowed up by bigger ones(see page 12). Whatever, the photography industry remains as fascinating as ever, and it’sa privilege to be part ofit.
