Any help, guidance or support that is provided on this journey is highly welcome. Abstract This paper analyzes the alienation and the metropolitan loneliness in The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot in the wider framework of the literary modernism and the cultural crisis of the post-First World War Europe. The analysis of the way in which Eliot describes the contemporary city as an incoherent space that exacerbates psychological alienation and undermines human connections is presented. By conducting a close analysis of the text, the paper explores the symbolic aspect of the urban space especially the picture of the Unreal City, in which people live in real space but are emotionally and spiritually remote. The imagery and symbolism, particularly the images of water, dryness, and wasteland, that Eliot employs to depict the spiritual sterility and the cultural decay of the modern civilization are also discussed in the paper. Moreover, the paper focuses on industrialization and materialism impacting human conscience by stating that it is the impersonality of the modern city pace, which leads to the loss of community values and the genuine emotional bonds. Besides, the study addresses Eliot employing mythological and religious allusions such as fertility myths, Christian imagery, and the philosophies of Eastern cultures that give a guideline to the understanding of the cultural crisis presented in the poem.
