A.H. McNeile’s book frames Christian prayer as a defense against “Self” in the wrong sense, warning readers that apparent zeal for God’s great end can tempt self-suppression to fail. The preface explains the contrast between self-assertion and love to God, and describes how religious activity, education, or perceived excellence can feed self even when devotion seems sincere. The contents outline chapters progressing through self, selflessness, self-development, self-assertion, self-indulgence, and related spiritual themes.

CAMBRIDGE W.HEFFER &SONS LTD.1931 PRINTED IN ENGLAND # PREFACE 个HE object of this book is to warn theI reader to be on the look-out against anever-present danger. The more he has theappearance of being keen on furthering thegreat End that God has in view, the morehe is tempted to allow Self,in the wrongsense—not the Self to be developed but the ·Self to be suppressed—to come to the front.Man's‘goodness'ought to mean, not theperformance of good deeds—in that sensewe are all more or less‘good’;it belongsto our civilization—but a love to God thatmakes him want what He wants, and strivetowards His End.The opposite of this isSelf-assertion;and to point out the harmdone by that to the divine Cause is thechief purpose of these pages.Self-assertiontakes,of course, numberless forms, but thecommonest in many lives are those that itassumes owing to some real or imaginaryexcellence, often due to birth or educationor something else quite outside the controlof Self..Sometimes,again,it is due tosheer religiousness,in which case the out-ward signs of devotion to the things of Godgo to hinder the working out of His Plan一a tragedy which can occur in the spirituallife of those who are least aware of it. FAQs

What danger does the author say the book warns against?

The preface warns readers to watch for a danger that is “ever-present,” namely the tendency for “Self” to come to the front even when one seems keen to further God’s end.

How does the author distinguish between Self in the wrong sense and genuine devotion?

The author contrasts suppressing “Self” (in the wrong sense) with developing the love to God that makes a person want what God wants. Self-assertion is presented as harmful to the divine cause.

Why can religiousness still lead to self-assertion?

The author says outward signs of devotion can hinder the working out of God’s plan, and this can occur especially among those least aware of the inner danger.
