Certain the confession wasn't meant for him, Hare questions Kosei, only to receive an immediate and unwavering answer: it was written for him. As Kosei's intense affection grows stronger by the day, Hare finds himself swept up by the relentless advances ofa boy who has been hiding his feelings for far too long. Á Prologue [I like you, you know] That day, right after we ’d changed seats. The confession written on the handout passed forward from the seat behind me was meant for *me*. The sender was Asamiya—a guy with striking good looks who stood at the center of the class social circle. There was no way someone so dazzling could possibly like a loner like me—someone who might as well be living on the opposite shore. I suspected it was a prank at first, but day after day, he kept making his feelings known with an overwhelming intensity. “I fell for you because you’re Mayama.” “I want to touch you.” The affection he showed me was utterly sincere, and before I knew it, I realized I didn’t mind it at all. And yet... “You don’t have to like me back.” When Asamiya smiled with that pained look in his eyes, I found myself unable to say a word. After all, I had already fallen for him. What am I supposed to do with these feelings? Á Period 1: Bewildered by My First Ever Confession It was spring of my second year of high school, and I was just starting to get used to my new class. It all started when someone—I don’t remember who—began complaining that the seating arrangement based on roll-call numbers was unfair. As a result, my school, Kitahara High, decided to shuffle the seats in mid-April. And I lucked out with a prime spot. Second from the back, right next to the hallway. For a guy like me—the type who immediately grabs the end seat on a train if it’s open—it was the perfect location. [I like you.] ...That is, until *this* worksheet got passed to me. I had been told to collect the papers from the back, and as one was passed forward, my eyes were drawn to it. The sender was, of course, the guy sitting behind me. At the top of the sheet, I saw the name “Kousei Asamiya” and a line of text—written ata slight slant—that looked unmistakably like a confession of love. Was some kind of game going on that I didn’t know about? If so, it was a pretty lame one. There were only guys in this row. Then again, it was an all-boys ’ school, so there weren’t any girls around to begin with. “Hey, you done yet?” Onigawa, the guy in the seat ahead of me, was looking back with a disgruntled expression, snapping me out of my daze. “Whoa—uh, wait...” Flustered, I turned around to ask what was going on. Asamiya—the culprit behind the delay in our row—was resting his cheek on his hand, wearing a faint smile. He looked so composed that it felt safe to say he knew exactly what he was doing. I glanced down at the paper in my hand again. It was definitely Asamiya ’s. “[Asamiya... um](Asamiya... um), *this*...” I spoke up tentatively—less to confirm his true intentions and more out of concern about whether it was actually okay to pass *this* along as is. There was still time to stop it. I should be the only one who knows about this. “Oh,” Asamiya said, as ifit all made sense to him. After a moment’s hesitation regarding the words that had caught my eye, Asamiya decisively erased them. Then, he handed the paper to me with a grunt. The confession note—now treated as ifit had never existed—finally made its way to Onikawa. He g
