FAQs

How do ACT and SAT differ in test format and section timing?

The SAT groups Reading and Writing/Language with specified minute ranges and includes an optional optional essay. The ACT includes English, Math, Reading, Science, and an optional writing essay with different section lengths.

What content areas are covered on the ACT versus the SAT?

Both are content-based, but the SAT emphasizes reading with relevant words in context, math, grammar/usage, and analytical writing. The ACT covers grammar/usage, math, reading, science reasoning, and writing.

How do scoring and penalties for wrong answers compare?

For wrong answers, neither test deducts points. SAT sections are scored on a 200–800 scale and combine into a 400–1600 composite, while ACT section scores range from 1–36 and the composite is an average across four sections.
